The advantages of sliding doors
Cupboards, dressing rooms, cupboards… There are more and more storage units with sliding doors. They not only offer a clean and tidy appearance piece by piece but also free up a lot of space. The problem with hinged doors is that you need space in front to be able to open them. If your closet has sliding doors, you don't need to open them but slide them out. In addition, you can also equip one or more of your doors ice cream or wallpaper with pretty patterns, on the one hand to enlarge the room, on the other to bring a design and modern side to your interior. And for disorderly aces or when you receive friends at the last minute, it is easy to "hide" what is lying around in your closet and close it in the blink of an eye to give the impression of a impeccably tidy interior. Clever, right?
Choosing sliding doors
The choice of sliding doors is very important and even more than the interior structure which will be mostly hidden by the doors. Their choice therefore goes through several criteria, namely the material (wood, PVC, glass, melamine, etc.), the color, coaching doors, the quality, the robustness, thickness ... Visit specialty stores to get a first look. There are often several models of sliding doors on display and you can view and touch them on site. Ask for quotes, catalogs and any other information for the successful completion of your sliding door closet.
Material necessary for the realization of the cupboard
Below is an exhaustive list of the main equipment and tools you will need to make your closet :
- One meter
- A pencil
- A saw (circular and hacksaw)
- A drill-driver
- A screwdriver
- A level
- A hammer
- A bracket
- A stepladder
- Boards of the chosen material
- Racks to adjust future storage shelves
- Closet bars
- Your sliding doors
- A rail for the bottom
- A contoured headband for the top
Step 1: Take the necessary measures
Using your meter, take all necessary measures to making your closet in the room where it will be held. Make room, use the height, measure length, width, depth, height and try to visualize the best how your closet will be installed. Consider making useful storage, don't make it too wide (sixty centimeters or the width of a hanger may be sufficient). Optimize the space, because if the problem of hinged doors no longer exists, there is no question of losing space by making it too wide. feel free to draw lines and marks in pencil on your wall, floor or ceiling if necessary.
Step 2: Realization of a plan
The most effective way to visualize your future closet is to make a plan on paper. In centimeters or millimeters, convert your measurements and write them on a sheet by drawing a diagram of your closet. If necessary, draw the contours of one color, write down the measurements of another, distinguish the inside of the closet from the sliding doors. The colors help to better visualize the final rendering.
Step 3: Executing the cuts
Once your plan is drawn, it will be easier for you to make your cuts and you won't be wrongif the measurements are good. Draw lines where you want to cut your boards and you will just have to saw in the marked place. Make the cuts outdoors if possible and pay attention to the handling of the saws. If you don't feel like doing it yourself, ask a handyman friend or professional for help.
Step 4: Assembly and installation of the structure
Once the cuts have been made, all you have to do is assemble and fix the structure. Take your drill-driver (or a drill and a driver if necessary) then using your pencil, make marks at all the places where you will drill holes. Then go to drilling the holes (material + walls) then assemble and screw the different boards of your furniture between them and the walls.
Step 5: Installation of sliding doors
There is no standard size for sliding doors. Indeed, you can find many lengths, widths and heights. Also note that you can ask a specialized store to make the cutouts for you, so that you can have the dimensions you want. And to keep your doors sliding, you need to install a floor rail and a profiled strip on the ceiling. Take a rail cut into the desired length (aluminum or steel) and fix it in the ground with a few screws (40 to 60 cm apart). Also attach the profile strip to the ceiling. Finally, install the door (s) at the back of the closet, fitting them first to the ceiling and then to the floor using rollers to facilitate sliding. Install to finish the front one.
